REDEVELOPMENT- The way to grow vertically in Mumbai

The city of Mumbai is in process of moving the way premier cities of the world like New York, Hong Kong,Shanghai, Dubai  have moved. Vertcally up..up..up. A longish city, home to the world's largest homeless and theworlds largest slum, is waking up to the realisation that its people need to be housed decently and in good environs.

The process of revelopment started a few years back and has gained momentum recently. SRA ,a buzzword despite nepotism, has been a sucess so far. One needs to take it forward more rigorously if the shape of Mumbai skyline has to change.

The island city was left out of thisdue to its cessed tructures. But now withthe Government taking the initiative, all is set to change. Higher FSI dole outs is welcome.Checks and balances are lacking and Government needs to tighten the Municipal systems which gives permissions .We need Consumer bodies to be involved  as watchdogs   or a Regulatory mechanism to be put in place. It requires Government and people's will to push such reforms into place .

People'sparticipation in redevelopments are thekey to go forward. Consumer groups need to interact morefiercely with Government and draw up protections to the people who are going to be beneficiaries. The inherent danger of corruption and nepotism plaguing the world is no strangerto India and Mumbai. Its time for people to wake and realise that they need to voice opinions okey issues like redevelopment rather than be silen spectators to a reveolution which will change the skyline of Mumbai
